First, Echo Valley Illuminaries are NOT to be mistaken for solar landscape or accent lights. They rely exclusively on “passive” solar energy, i.e. the sun or incandescent light to charge them and do not have a secondary power and or energy source to keep them glowing brightly and continuously at night. For those wishing to have that feature or capability please see our LunaLite family of products which incorporate “active” solar technology.
Second, where you position or locate your Illuminaries product in the yard directly affects how long and brightly it glows after dusk. Illuminaries should be placed in an area that receives full sun during the day and if possible, the late afternoon sun for maximum crystal chargeability. This location should also be an area away from any potential source(s) of light interference, i.e. porch lights, street lights, landscape lights, interior house lights, etc. to achieve maximum visual clarity. Moonlight will also diminish the amount of glow one can see, so it is equally important to have it situated in an area that is completely dark in the evening.
Third, because the period from dusk to “dark” varies throughout the year (longer in the summer and shorter in the winter, depending on latitude), the longer that period lasts the shorter the duration and intensity your Illuminaries product will glow due to the fact that the crystals will have given off much of their stored energy.
First, make sure the water reservoir is properly filled and ensure that connection of the solar panel and pump is secure and that the pump is suspended properly near the bottom of the reservoir. Check the vinyl hose to make sure it is not kinked or filled with debris that may cause blockage or impede circulation.
Next, wait until the sun is high enough in the sky to provide enough direct sunlight to operate the pump. Note: During the winter months (North America) the sun is low in the horizon and the solar pump may only operate for a few hours. (perhaps from 11am-2pm or so). For testing purposes you may remove the solar panel from the birdbath bowls retainer ring and angle it directly toward the sun to start the pump. If the sky is clear the pump should make a whirring sound indicating that it is receiving enough energy to power it. Water should begin flowing out of nozzle on the solar panel, even if the flow is not at its peak. Place solar panel back in the birdbath bowl retainer when done.
If you still do not see water flowing out of the nozzle or showerhead on the solar panel, nor hear the pump running when receiving direct sunlight, remove the cover from underneath the water pump to make sure no debris has collected that may cause blockage. Also, you may try turning the flow adjustment knob to a higher setting to see if that solves the problem. If the unit still does not function properly after having taken these steps, contact our customer service department for further assistance.
Depending on where you live, the prevailing climate (hot and arid vs. humid and wet) and wind conditions, you may need to check the water level of your solar birdbath-fountain every day or once every several days. What is most important to understand is that this is not a product you can just place out in the yard and forget about. It requires attention and care in order for it to function properly and consistently. Clean water (empty and refill the reservoir periodically) is beneficial to the birds as well as the pump apparatus.
Should the water level drop below that of the suspended pump or the reservoir run completely dry, there is added stress placed on the pump that could cause it to seize and prematurely fail. This is why it is critically important to make sure the reservoir has an adequate supply of clean water to ensure best results and prolong the life of the water pump.
To reduce water loss it highly recommended that you use the bubbler showerhead (the one with a single large hole) that came with your unit on windy days so that most of the water stays in the bowl and recirculates.
If you know ahead of time that no one from your household will be able attend to the unit for several days it is highly recommended that you turn the solar panel over on top of the birdbath bowl retainer so that the pump will not function in your absence. The other option is to bring the entire pump and panel assembly indoors where it will not be exposed to the elements.
Let the unit charge in full sunlight for 8 – 10 hours prior to testing. Make sure that the solar panel on the base of the figurine or LunaLite faces the direction of the sun during this period.
Once the batteries on the unit are charged bring the product in a pitch-dark room (a windowless room preferably). If it lights up then it is working properly. If the light does not come on check the manual on/off switch to confirm it is in the “on” position. Note: Please reference the user instruction sheet that came with your product, as the on-off switch varies depending on the item.
If the particular model has been in use for a while the solar rechargeable battery or batteries may need replacing. Please refer to the user instruction sheet that came with the product for directions on how to do this.
If you are still experiencing problems and the unit is under warranty please return it to the place of purchase for an exchange, replacement or refund.
